2002 – Kansas City Riverfront ParkThe Kansas City Riverfront Park is the perfect example of a brownfields redevelopment project. To move forward on the redevelopment of the land, it was necessary to determine who would be financially responsible for remediation of the contamination on the site. The first animation was presented to regulators to put pressure on them to bring regulatory enforcement against the parties responsible for contamination of the property. The exercise was to show the current site for proposed development and overlay old plant locations as they existed in the 1800’s in relationship to the contaminated area. The second animation depicts the gas plant from the 1800’s and tours the plant to prove negligence in fracturing coal which resulted in releasing byproducts into the ground that caused the current contamination. The third animation shows the results of a successful brownfields redevelopment by demonstrating what the riverfront area would be cleaned up and redeveloped into a successful residential, mixed-use plan including commercial and office space.
